Atikokan & District Association for Developmental Services

The Atikokan & District Association for Developmental Services is a community based organization. It provides a full range of services to meet the varying needs of people with developmental disability to enhance their quality of life.

Originally incorporated in 1969 as the Atikokan & District Association for the Mentally Retarded, the name was changed in 1991 to better reflect our mission statement. It is our belief that no one deserves to be held back by such a limiting label. The people we serve should have the opportunity to successfully participate in the community.

To fulfill our mission statement, the Association plays an active role in identifying the needs of the people we serve. We support these individuals in living a more independent life through residential services, supported independent living, supported employment, and life skills training, as well as daily leisure and recreational programs.

The Association is governed by a Board of nine Directors who sit on nine standing committees, as well as any ad hoc committees that might be required. The Directors are volunteers from the community who are dedicated to improving the lives of people with a developmental handicap. Membership is open to anyone in the community and we welcome all those who wish to join us, as we move forward with our goals. The administration office, along with our meeting room, is located at 114 Gorrie St., Atikokan.

Our Goal
"That all persons live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in the community, and have the opportunity to participate effectively."

Caland Manor
Through the residential program, the Atikokan and District Association for Developmental Services oversees Caland Manor Group Home at 9 Spruce Road in Atikokan. This comfortable home provides supports to six residents. It provides the opportunity to maximize daily living skills and to achieve the highest possible level of independence, leading to the possibility of supported apartment living or eventual independent living. This program ensures that their health, safety and welfare needs are met, as well as provides maximum access to community based opportunities for personal growth and development.
